Fish Playground Idle guide: connect water, merge fish and grow
Fish Playground Idle is a free browser idle fish game by FoolFish Games. Fish merging, pipe routing and aquarium growth happen on one shared board. This guide explains the playable 0.3.2 version, with a first-reef walkthrough and concrete income examples.
Start with a guided first reef
The opening lesson pauses idle earnings while you connect water, merge two guppies and hatch a fish. Follow the highlighted buttons and animated pointer. Your practice reef becomes your first reef when you finish. Existing players can replay from Help in a separate practice reef without changing their fish, shells or channels. You can explicitly skip the lesson to start idle earnings.

Your first minute: connect before you expand
You start with 30 shells, three Sunny Guppies and eight open beds. Two guppies live in the top row; the third is in the second bed of the next row. That lower fish begins disconnected, earning only 0.15 shells per second.
The first merge and the first connection to a second-row fish also complete milestones. Their shell rewards arrive automatically; there is no separate reward screen to visit.
- Select Current in the bottom toolbar.
- Turn the second bed of the top row once. Its branch now points down, carrying water to the lower row. The guppy's bed brightens and its displayed income rises.
- Switch back to Fish. Select the top-left guppy, then the guppy next to it. They merge into a level 2 Reef Clown.
- Use the same board to continue. Hatch another guppy when you have an empty bed, then decide whether to merge or improve its position.
Read the reef before spending shells
The top-left inlet is your water source. Channels carry water only when both sides of a shared edge are open. A line that visually approaches another bed is not enough if that bed has no opening facing it. Bright moving water follows connected edges from the inlet. Short orange end caps show unmatched openings. In Current mode, Undo restores the previous channel rotation without changing your fish.
Switching to Current mode fades the fish so you can see the route beneath them. Each tap turns one channel clockwise. Switching back to Fish mode restores selection and merging. Turning channels costs nothing, but disconnecting productive beds reduces your ongoing earnings. Water does not wrap across the left and right edges of the board.
How fish merge, and why location still matters
Two fish of the same level become one fish of the next level, leaving an empty bed behind. Their channel pieces stay in place. Two guppies have a combined base production of two shells per second; a Reef Clown has a base production of three. That is a 50% base-production increase, before current conditions are applied.
Actual income also depends on location. A connected fish's rate is divided by 1 + 0.12 × its shortest water-route distance from the inlet. At full pressure, a Reef Clown one step away earns 3 ÷ 1.12, approximately 2.68 shells per second. Four steps away, it earns 3 ÷ 1.48, approximately 2.03. Moving it closer can be more useful than hatching another low-level fish.
Choose your destination when merging: the resulting fish stays on the second bed you select. You can also select a fish and an empty bed to move it without changing its level. Different levels cannot merge, and level 8 is the maximum.

Fish levels and oxygen demand
These are base values, not guaranteed earnings for every bed. Disconnected fish earn 15% of base production and do not use the connected reef's oxygen budget.
Each row lists level, species, base shells per second and oxygen required.
- 1 · Sunny Guppy · 1 · 1
- 2 · Reef Clown · 3 · 2
- 3 · Mint Sailfin · 9 · 4

When should you upgrade the pump?
The starting pump supplies six oxygen. Each upgrade adds another six. If your connected fish demand more than the supply, pressure becomes supply divided by demand. All connected fish's rates are multiplied by this fraction, in addition to their route-distance adjustment.
For example, two level 4 fish need sixteen oxygen. A starting pump gives them 6 ÷ 16 = 37.5% pressure. One pump upgrade raises supply to twelve and pressure to 75%, doubling those fish's connected production without changing their placement. If pressure is already 100%, a pump upgrade will not increase current income; it makes room for future growth.
A same-level merge doubles the individual fish's oxygen demand but replaces two fish, so their total demand stays the same. The benefit comes from better base production and a freed bed. Hatching an additional fish, by contrast, can increase the connected reef's total demand.
Expand when space helps your next merge
You begin with two rows and can buy two more, reaching sixteen beds. The third row costs 180 shells and the fourth costs 900. Newly opened beds are part of the same network. Connect their channels before moving important fish into them.
A hatch always adds a level 1 guppy to the nearest available connected bed, or to an empty resting bed if none are connected. The first costs twelve shells. The cost grows by 8% per hatch, rounded up, with the price exponent capped after thirty-five purchases. Keep room for low-level pairs rather than filling every empty bed without a merge plan.
Idle earnings, saves and returning later
After finishing or explicitly skipping the lesson, the aquarium earns while it is open. When you leave or hide the page, away earnings use half the saved reef's rate, capped at eight hours. A reef producing ten shells per second therefore earns 18,000 shells during a one-hour absence, or at most 144,000 for eight hours or longer. Shorter routes and enough oxygen help passive returns as well as active play.
Progress is browser-local. Use Save and settings to export a JSON backup as copyable text before clearing browser data or moving devices. Save the copied text in a .json file for importing later. Importing a backup asks before replacing the current reef. Signing into FoolFish does not sync this game's save.
