How to play Tic Tac Toe

Click or tap an empty square to place X or O. Players alternate turns. X starts a new game; Play again alternates the starting mark.

On 3×3, connect three marks; on 5×5, connect four; on 7×7, connect five. Horizontal, vertical and both diagonal lines count. A full board without a line is a draw.

Choose Easy, Medium or Hard and play as X or O, or share a device with a friend. Hard searches all continuations on 3×3; larger boards use a limited search. Hint suggests a square. Undo reverses one local move or your turn with the computer reply.

Play Tic Tac Toe online

Tic Tac Toe is the familiar X and O game, also called noughts and crosses. Each turn adds one mark to an empty square. Read the open lines, block your opponent and build a winning line of your own. Play a quick 3×3 round or expand the board for a longer tactical challenge. Local play requires no download or account.

How to play noughts and crosses

Choose Play computer or Play with a friend. Against the computer, choose your mark and difficulty. X starts a new match, so choosing O lets the computer open. Click or tap an empty square to place your mark. Occupied squares stay fixed. Play again switches the starting mark after each completed round.

3×3, 5×5 and 7×7 Tic Tac Toe rules

The classic 3×3 game needs three matching marks in a line. A 5×5 board needs four, while a 7×7 board needs five. Lines can run horizontally, vertically or in either diagonal direction. Marks must be consecutive; gaps and opposing marks break a line. The first completed line ends the game, and a full board without a line is a draw.

Tic Tac Toe strategy: blocks and forks

Look for a winning move before placing a defensive mark. If your opponent can finish a line next turn, block that square. A fork creates two winning threats at once, leaving the opponent unable to stop both. In classic 3×3 play, the centre participates in four possible lines and each corner in three. On larger boards, check threats across the whole board rather than following only your latest mark.

Computer difficulty and two-player games

Easy chooses a random legal square. Medium takes an immediate win or blocks an immediate loss before choosing another move. Hard searches all possible continuations on 3×3, so it cannot be beaten there; larger boards use a limited search and can be beaten. Two-player mode lets friends take turns on the same screen. Hint shows a suggested square without playing it. Undo reverses one local move or your turn and the computer reply.

Touch controls and saved progress

The board adapts to portrait and landscape screens. Click, tap or use Tab and Enter to place a mark. Learn to play explains the rules in five short steps, and the sound button mutes game effects.
