Mahjong Clearer turns a layered arrangement of tiles into a puzzle of observation and order. Your goal is to remove every tile by matching two available tiles with the same face. A visible match is not always a legal move: a tile must be uncovered and have at least one open horizontal side.
Each pair changes the choices you can make next. Removing a high tile can reveal a face underneath; removing an end tile can free its neighbor. Before committing to a pair, look at which parts of the layout it will open. You do not need to know the names of the symbols to start—compare their full designs.
How to play Mahjong Clearer
This is mahjong solitaire, a one-person tile-removal puzzle. It does not use the draw-and-discard turns or opponent hands found in multiplayer mahjong.
- Press Play and follow the introductory tile-matching examples.
- Click or tap an available tile, then choose another available tile with the same face.
- Check the top and the left and right sides if a matching tile cannot be selected.
- Keep opening layers and matching pairs until the board is empty.
Controls and helpful tools
Check the in-game controls for the current board. A hint identifies a move you can make; it is not a promise that every later choice will lead to a clear board.
- Mouse or touch: select a tile and then its matching partner.
- Hint: reveal an available match when you have overlooked one.
- Shuffle: rearrange the remaining tile faces when you need a different set of choices.
- Undo: take back a recent move and examine an alternative.
A better first move
Compare the result of two possible pairs. Prefer the pair that removes a cover or opens a blocked row, rather than a pair that leaves the rest of the layout unchanged. When three identical tiles are available, check which two would uncover more useful faces.
If you get stuck, pause and rescan the edges before shuffling. Undo can help you test a different earlier choice. Learning what changed is more useful than repeatedly selecting a tile that is still blocked.
Returning to your game
The browser player can restore supported progress in the same browser. Keep the same browser profile and allow site storage if you want to return to it; clearing site data or using a private session can remove local progress. This is not a promise of a synchronized save on another device.
Use the larger player view if the tiles are difficult to distinguish. Mouse and touch controls are supported; the layout you see depends on your screen.
Common questions
What makes a tile available?
No other tile may cover it, and at least one of its left or right sides must be open. Both tiles in a matching pair must pass these checks.
Does Mahjong Clearer always use 144 tiles?
No. Introductory examples and regular boards can contain different numbers of tiles. Your goal is to clear the board you are given, not to assume a fixed tile count.
Can I play Mahjong Clearer alone?
Yes. It is a single-player mahjong solitaire game. You do not need an opponent or a multiplayer lobby.
Is Mahjong Clearer free to play?
Yes. You can load the browser game and start playing without buying it.
